Melinda Hernandez wanted an apology. Sitting across from her, on a bench tucked in a corner of the picturesque Stanford University campus, was John David Rice-Cameron. 

Even at an elite university, Rice-Cameron stood out for his political pedigree: the son of Susan Rice, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and national security adviser under President Barack Obama, and today head of President Biden's Domestic Policy Council. 

Rice-Cameron, like his mother, has considerable power in his social sphere but at the other end of the ideological spectrum.
