The controversy over the Florida Board of Education’s new guidelines for the teaching of African American history circulates around a single clause: “slaves developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit.” If that was all the guidelines consisted of, we would indeed have cause for concern. But they don’t.
