From Sputnik to CHIPS: Preparing Students for the Future

After the Soviets beat us to space with the launch of Sputnik in 1957, the United States responded with shock, anxiety, and the realization that America had fallen behind. In response, the U.S. government launched an ambitious effort to improve the nation’s public schools and scientific infrastructure with significant new funding and programs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
