Jews and teachers unions have long stood side-by-side. Al Shanker, who founded New York’s United Federation of Teachers and, during his 23-year tenure as president of the American Federation of Teachers (AFT), made teachers unions a power player in Democratic Party politics, was a proud Jew who used his position to fight antisemitism and promote Jewish causes.
